Who we are

Music for Minors Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by Dorothy Friedenreich in 2004. Dorothy was so inspired by her son’s music through the years that she wanted to make sure that other children would have the opportunity to play if they so desired. Her contribution toward that goal was to create the Music for Minors Foundation (MFM). Its mission is to enhance the lives of children in Southwest Florida, by providing them with the gift of musical instruments.

Since its inception, the mission of MFM has attracted many volunteers and supporters. Today, it continues to be a solidly run all-volunteer operation, that has given out more than 140 instruments to the youth of Lee and Collier counties.

It is the vision of the Music for Minors Foundation to make sure that any qualified student in Southwest Florida, who cannot afford to purchase or rent an instrument, has access to a quality instrument.

What we do

The Foundation works closely with middle school string orchestra and band teachers to identify qualified seventh grade students who have had a year of band or orchestra, that demonstrate a sincere desire, and that have a financial need.

The candidates are then interviewed for participation in the MFM program. The number of instruments awarded each year is dependent on the donations of the Foundation’s supporters.

The students that are accepted into the program are notified and invited to a reception where they are honored with a yearly grant for the instrument of their choice.

Each year the students must be re-certified to ensure they continue to meet Foundation requirements. Students completing a yearly recertification for four years and become proficient in musical ability, receives a certificate of ownership for the instrument.
